The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain - 1953 Words

Slavery is solely based on the fact that white people are more superior than black people. Huck and Jim defy odds by going against the overall perception of slavery to create an unbreakable bond in the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. Jim and Huck both are placed in depressing situations and soon realize they have nothing to lose. Pap is nothing but a drunk and a bad influence on Huck, which is why Huck fakes his death using the blood of a pig. As for Jim, he believes Miss Watson is going to break her promise of never selling him to New Orleans; his conscience convinces him to run because he doesn’t want to go to another plantation or location. Jim can relate to Huck because Miss Watson seemed to also not care fo r Jim like Pap doesn’t care for Huck. Miss Watson treated Jim like any other slave owner and was preparing to sell Jim to a master in New Orleans. Huck and Jim met up together a little later on an island not far off from their homes and drafted a raft that would help them travel along the Mississippi River to freedom. While on the island, Jim explains why he ran away, â€Å"She pecks me all de time, en treats me pooty rough, but she awluz said she wouldn’ sell me down to Orleans. But I noticed dey wuz a nigger trader roun’ de place considerable lately, en I begin to git oneasy... I hear old missus tell de widder she gwyne to sell me down to Orleans, but she didn’ want to, but she said she could git eight hund’d dollars for me, en it ‘uz sich a big stack o’money she couldn’ resis’† (59). Although Miss Watson showed she didn’t want to sell Jim, she still lied. Yes, eight thousand dollars is a lot of money espe cially back then, but she didn’t keep to her promise which only left Jim the option to run. Jim and Huck teaming up with one another may be the best thing either of them could have hoped for. Now, instead of making the same journey alone, they have one another to count on. Jim and
